Joel Laycock
Development Coordinator

Joel is Metis, Anishinaabe.

Joel joined LDM in 2022, after a successful tenure with Metro Vancouver Aboriginal Executive Council (MVAEC) where he was instrumental in building and maintaining positive inter sectoral relationships within a diverse cultural stakeholder environment. Joel’s urban Indigenous work benefits from a strong, immersive cultural upbringing, which continues to guide his unique perspective developing community within urban centers.

Joel was instrumental in leading a Government of Alberta’s Indigenous Relations Urban Governance strategy on behalf of Metis Calgary Family Services Society’s Assini Group as a Program Manager, a 3-year strategy which continues today in Calgary and formed part of the groundwork for the launch of Calgary’s Indigenous Relations Office (IRO).

Joel’s early work included mentoring youth, as a role model and youth worker for the Aboriginal Student Program, a stay in school initiative for at risk urban indigenous youth.

Joel’s creative talents coupled with his deep cultural upbringing, enables him to bring a unique and relevant perspective to his work. As a recipient of the SAIYA (Southern Alberta Indigenous Youth Award) these skills and characteristics distinguished him among his peers and the City of Calgary.

Joel’s prior lived experiences and contributions within the Metis community are reflected in his passion to serve the community through a strength based, positive approach which builds relationships and honours tradition. “All meaningful relationships, whether between people or organizations, require respect” says Joel, “I was taught early by my Elders that this begins with listening”. Joel approaches his work as a privilege to serve his community as well as larger society which collectively benefits when those efforts succeed.
